Adolphus and Mary Jane Solomons

Shown here leading her little brother by the hand, Mary Jane Solomons would remain close to Adolphus throughout her life. The children of John Solomons and Julia Levy Solomons, Mary Jane and Adolphus were raised with two other siblings in New York City, where their father was involved in producing the daily newspaper the New York Courier and Enquirer.

Mary Jane joined her brother to Washington, D.C., sometime after he moved in 1859. There he enjoyed a distinguished career as a publisher, public servant and philanthropist.
