Elizabeth Lewis, or Bessie, as she was known to friends and family, was born in New York in 1827, one of the nine children of Susan Solomon and Lewis Lewis to survive infancy. She married Solomon Leopold Jacobs, and together they had six children. Their daughter Josephine married Alexander Alexander.
