Hannah Leman Harris

Born in Frankfurt in 1814, Hannah’s first recorded presence in the United States is in 1851 in Charleston, when she was married to fruit merchant Isaac Harris. Hannah was thirty-seven when they married, and Isaac forty-six. It seems they had no children, but both played active roles in the community around Beth Elohim. Hannah served as president of the Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Society and, upon her death, left a bequest of $5,000 to the organization.
