Isaac Harris

Though we have only a few details from which to ketch out his life, we do know that Isaac Harris spent much or all of that life in Charleston. It is there that he was born and died. There too, in 1851, he married Hannah Lemans, an immigrant from Germany. He engaged in the affairs of Beth Elohim and served as a member of the Hebrew Orphan Society. The 1850 census lists Isaac as a fruit merchant living at 158 Philip Street. Though too old to serve as a soldier, he enlisted in support of the Confederacy: he is listed in the December 11, 1861 edition of the The Courier as a private in the Confederate Home Guard Regiment of Reserves, Company D.
