John Solomons was born in London in 1789 and immigrated to United States in 1810, settling in New York. He worked alongside James Watson Webb in producing a daily broadsheet, the New York Courier and Enquirer, itself a merger of two earlier newspapers, one of them Mordecai Manuel Noah’s New-York Enquirer. He married Julia Levy, daughter of Simeon and Hetty Levy in New York in 1818, and they had 4 children, including Adolphus and Mary Jane.
