The older of the two daughters born to Samson Levy, Jr. and Sarah Coates Levy, Sophia was Jewish in lineage only. She was raised within Philadelphia’s Protestant elite. In 1817 she married Major Dixon Stansbury. They settled in Baltimore and had six children.
