Vogel Hamburger

There are many uncertainties about the lives of the two Hamburger women, Vogel and Sarah, beginning with their relationship. Were they cousins? Sisters-in-law? We cannot say. Both were born in Bavaria and both seem to have settled in Baltimore without husbands, some time in the 1840s.

Sarah is listed as living with her son, Isaac, a clothier, then twenty-four, and his wife Rebecca in the 1850 Census. She continued living with them until her death at the age of ninety-four.

Vogel, on the other hand, was the mother of at least eight children, all born in Germany (the youngest, Feidel, born in 1842) and all of whom relocated with her to Baltimore.
