Elvira Nathan was the daughter of wealthy New York businessman Seixas Nathan and Sarah Seixas, and the granddaughter of Simon Nathan and Grace Mendes Seixas Nathan. She grew up in a large family with fifteen siblings, including Gershom Seixas Nathan. In 1852 she married David Hays Solis, a Philadelphia merchant. They had nine children together.
