Philip Nathans was the son of German immigrant Isaiah Nathans from his second marriage to Judith Russell. Judith was the aunt of Philip’s future wife, Sarah Sheftall Russell—just two of the numerous connections between the Russell and Nathans families. Philip and Sarah had eight children. Deeply involved with Mikveh Israel, Philip also became a member of Philadelphia’s Hebrew Society for Visitation of the Sick and Mutual Assistance.
