Joshua Moses

Like many New Yorkers committed to the American cause, Reyna Levy Moses and Isaac Moses had fled to Philadelphia during the Revolution. It was here in close exile that Joshua Moses was born. His family would return to New York and he would remain there for the entirety of his life. Like his father, Joshua became a merchant and involved himself actively with congregation Shearith Israel.

In 1817 he married Sara Rodriguez Brandon, daughter of Barbadian trader in sugar, Abraham Rodriguez Brandon and Sarah Esther Lopez Brandon. Several years later, Sarah’s brother Isaac married Joshua’s sister Lavinia, strengthening ties between the two families. Joshua and Sarah had eight children together who survived infancy, including Isaac Moses, Jr. who would become a Union officer in the Civil War.
