The eldest of eight children born to Zipporah Hart and Eleazer Samuel Lazarus, Samuel Lazarus grew up in New York. His brother Jacob was a painter who made portraits of several subjects in this archive. Not much is known to us about Samuel’s professional or personal life. He remained in New York and seems never to have married.
