Barnard Gratz Etting was the second youngest of eight children born to Solomon and Rachel Gratz Etting, a branch of the vast Gratz-Etting clan, one of nineteenth-century Philadelphia’s leading Jewish families. Among Barnard’s closest relatives were his sister Richea Gratz Etting and half-sister Miriam Etting Myers.
