Joseph Solomon was born in London in 1710. In 1738 he married Bilah Myers Cohen, and within the next decade they immigrated to the United States. They settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he became a shop owner and merchant, perhaps the first Jew to settle in that then western outpost. He became a charter member of the Friendship Fire Company. Joseph and Bilah had five children including Shinah Solomon Etting.
