Joseph Solomon was born in London in 1710. In 1738, he married Bilah Myers Cohen, and within the next decade they immigrated to the United States. They settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where Joseph became a shop owner and merchant, perhaps the first Jew to settle in that then western outpost. He became a charter member of the Friendship Fire Company. Joseph and Bilah had five children including Shinah Solomon Etting.
