There is surprisingly little in the historical record about Amelia Schloss, wife prominent dry goods merchant and later umbrella manufacturer Moses Schloss. Even her maiden name and the date of her death remain obscure. What is known is that she, like her husband, was involved with Reform Judaism—first in Albany, New York, where they lived in the 1840s and were active in Congregation Beth El, and then in New York City, where they settled in the late 1850s joining Temple Emanu-El. In his Reminiscences, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise recalled her from his tenure in Albany: “the noble housewife, the amiable and kind-hearted Madame Amelia Schloss.”
