Henrietta Levy and her sister Martha were the daughters of Mary Pearce and Judge Moses Levy. Their father was a very successful judge and lawyer, and the girls grew up in the highest rungs of Philadelphia’s Protestant elite. Although they were the great granddaughters of Moses Levy, a founder of American Jewry, this branch of the Levy family had been Episcopalian for several generations.
