Captured here at ages eleven, nine, and seven, Charles, Jeannette, and Amelia Millhiser were the children of Joseph and Louisa Millhiser. Their mother was born in Manchester, England, their father in Bavaria, and the couple had married in Richmond, Virginia, in 1847. It was there that the Millhiser children were raised, in the community around congregation Beth Ahabah—a community that included their aunt and uncle William Thalhimer and Mary Millhiser Thalhimer.

Charles would become successful in business, his interests including a cigar factory in Richmond. He married Emma Michelbacher, daughter of Miriam Angle and Maximilian Joseph Michelbacher. Jeanette would marry her first cousin Charles Hutzler, son of Abraham Hutzler and their father’s sister Yetta. Amelia never married.
