Although it is not known with complete certainty, the woman depicted in this silhouette, recorded only as J.P. Noah, is most likely Judith Noah. Born in 1789 in New York, Judith was the second of Manuel and Zipporah Phillips Noah’s two children, her older brother famed American Jewish leader and politician Mordecai Manuel Noah. After their mother’s death in 1792, the two Noah children would be raised by their grandparents, Jonas and Rebecca Machado Phillips. Judith lived most of her life in New York, where she died, unmarried and childless in 1868.
