Therese Cahn

Therese Cahn belonged to a wealthy Philadelphia family. Her husband Abraham, a jeweler, appears to have emigrated from Europe by the mid-19th century, as he begins to appear in Philadelphia city records by 1850. Therese’s daughter, Emma Cahn, married Adolph Lewisohn, a partner in Lewisohn Brothers of New York City, in 1878. The firm specialized in the developing metal-mining industry, focusing in particular on copper and lead, and was highly successful. Emma would give Therese two grandsons (Sam Adolph and Julius A.) and two granddaughters, while she herself played an active role in various New York charities as well as the Emanu-El Sisterhood. Emma’s daughter Adele eventually married investment banker Arthur Lehman and became a prominent philanthropist in her own right, as well as the grandmother of Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr.
